POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 25, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team secured a trip to the Liberty League Championships Saturday afternoon, besting St. Lawrence University 8-1 on Josselyn Tennis Courts. The win moves VC to 8-9 overall on the year and 4-2 in the Liberty League, as the Brewers can now finish no worse than fourth in the conference. St. Lawrence drops to 8-8 on the season (2-4 Liberty) with the defeat.
The Brewers raced out to an early lead in doubles, as sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) downed John Megas and Robert Schmitz at No. 1, 8-4. Sophomores Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) and Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) were next to win, topping Rhonny Rosario and Kevin Frommer 8-4 in the No. 3 match.
After initially playing from behind, juniors Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Evan Udine (Delary Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) battled back to complete the doubles sweep for Vassar, defeating Tom Luchars and Elliot Solandt 8-6 at No. 2.
The Brewers took care of business in singles, winning five of six to claim the overall team victory. Litsky extended his winning streak to six matches at No. 1 singles, beating Rosario 6-2, 6-2. He remains undefeated (6-0) against Liberty League competition this season.
Cooper, Phelps, Udine and Laso picked up wins in matches 2-5 to wrap up the day at Joss Courts.
The Vassar men's tennis team honored senior William Zhu (San Francisco, CA/Lowell) in a pre match ceremony this morning as he played his final home match in the burgundy and gray.
The Brewers will look to improve their seed to the Liberty League Tournament tomorrow, as the team travels to face Hobart College (10-7, 4-2 Liberty) tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
