POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team finished off its Liberty League doubleheader weekend with a 9-0 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon. The victory moves Vassar to 3-2 in the Liberty League, putting the Brewers in position to secure a bid to the conference tournament with two Liberty matches left this season. VC is now 7-9 overall in duals on the year, while RIT drops to 3-9 (1-6 LL).
"It was good to get a win against a tough RIT team that played with a lot of energy," said head coach Alex Wong. "We have a couple big matches next weekend and are looking forward to the opportunity earning a spot at the Liberty League Championships. We played a solid match today and are excited for a strong end of the season."
Sophomores Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) and Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) started off the day with an 8-3 victory vs. Jason Alexander and Jared Raphael at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and junior Daniel Cooper downed Amos Baptiste and Jared Ingoglia at No. 1, 8-2 giving the Brewers a quick 2-0 edge.
Juniors Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Evan Udine (Delary Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) completed the doubles sweep for VC, winning 8-5 at No. 3 over Ken Chou and Frank McGinn III.
The Brewers kept rolling right into singles, taking all six matches in two sets. Laso was the first to win, claiming his 11th victory on the year over Ken Chou 6-0, 6-1. Udine clinched the match for the Brewers, finishing off Jared Raphael 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Litsky extended his singles win streak to five, winning at No. 1 6-0, 6-1 over Amos Baptiste, while Cooper, Phelps and Luckmann all won to give VC the perfect 9-0 victory.
The Brewers now have two critical Liberty League matches against St. Lawrence University and Hobart College to wrap up the regular season next weekend. The Brewers will first host St. Lawrence on Joss Courts at 10 am on Saturday April 25 for senior day. VC will then travel to Geneva, NY to battle Hobart in its regular season finale.
