NEEDHAM, MA (March 7, 2015) – Babson College swept doubles and earned five singles victories in a tightly contested 8-1 dual match victory over Vassar Saturday night. Three separate singles matches went to a super tiebreak, as the match lasted for over six hours at Boston Sports Club. Babson moves to 2-1 on the year with the win, while Vassar drops to 4-5 in head-to-head competition on the year.
In No. 1 doubles, junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and sophomore Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) played a close match with Victor Vu and Connor DeFiore, but came up just short dropping an 8-6 decision. Babson earned two more victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, and headed into the singles competition with a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/ Shorecrest Prep. School), junior Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Luckmann all played a trio of hard fought singles matches, battling to a super tiebreak in all three. After getting up 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match, Litsky dropped the second set 6-2, before his opponent Roberto Perez grinded out a 10-4 victory in the super tiebreak.
Phelps played from behind after dropping a closely contested first set 6-7 to Victor Vu in the No. 3 singles match. He came back to win the second set 7-6, before Vu clinched the match with a 10-5 win in the third. Luckmann also played from behind after dropping his first set 6-4 to Ben Roque in the No. 6 match, but tied things up at one set a piece with a 6-3 set two victory. The two were neck and neck in the super tiebreak, before Roque pulled away for a 12-10 victory.
Sophomore Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) picked up the lone win for VC on the day, defeating Connor DeFiore 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match to secure his fifth victory of the season.
Vassar will head west for sunnier skies next week when the team travels to Southern California for its spring break trip. The Brewers will first face Chapman University on Monday, March 16 in Orange, CA at 4:00 pm.
