WHITTIER, CA (March 18, 2015) - Vassar earned its first win over a ranked team this season, topping No. 39 Whittier College 7-2 Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers took a 2-1 edge in doubles, then won five of six in singles to secure the team victory. VC now stands 5-7 on the year in dual matches, while Whittier drops to 1-8 on the season.
Sophomores Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Ameican de Quito) and Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) got the Brewers started at No. 3 doubles, cruising to an 8-2 victory over Tyler Linscott and Joseph Laguna. Sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) put the Brewers ahead 2-0, downing Samuel Farmer and David Stanko at No. 1, 8-2. The Poets claimed a victory at No. 2 doubles, but the Brewers still went into singles in front 2-1.
Litsky made quick work of Farmer at No. 1 singles, besting the Whittier junior 6-1, 6-1. Laso won his fourth consecutive singles match to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead, beating Ian Ross 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 match. Luckmann clinched the match with his first singles win of the trip at No. 6, besting Laguna for the second time of day 6-0, 6-1.
Cooper earned another win for Vassar in the No. 2 match, defeating Stanko 6-1, 6-3. Junior Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire) earned the final victory for the Brewers on the day, claiming a three-set marathon over Shogo Shimizu. Phelps went ahead 7-5 after the first, before Shimizu countered with a 7-5 victory of his own in the second set. Phelps took care of business in the super tiebreak, winning 10-7 to secure his third singles victory of the spring.
The Brewers will enter a brief two-day hiatus out in California, before wrapping up their spring trip against George Fox University on March 21.
