St. Lawrence Knocks Off Women's Basketball Saturday, 62-50

Box Score

CANTON, NY (February 7, 2015) -- The Vassar College women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start Saturday, falling at St. Lawrence University 62-50 in Liberty League action from Burkman Gym on Senior Day for the Saints.

The Brewers (8-13, 3-9 Liberty League) scored the game's first bucket on a layup by junior Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area), but the host Saints (17-4, 12-1 Liberty) responded with 13 of the game's next 15 points. SLU built its advantage up to as much as 19 points with 3:28 to play in the opening period on an Allison Cady layup, and took a 34-17 lead into the break.

After halftime, Vassar was able to outscore St. Lawrence 33-28, but the Brewers never got closer than 11 points in falling to the conference-leading Saints. Freshman Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) again paced the Brewers in scoring, as she finished with a game-high 18 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

Junior Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) finished 10 points under her average on the season with seven points Saturday, grabbing seven caroms as well, while senior Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) recorded nine points on 3-of-5 shooting.

Freshman Kim Romanoff (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional) added six points, and Serafini finished with eight points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Vassar shot 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the floor, and narrowly won the rebounding battle 40-39. With the loss, the Brewers are mathematically eliminated from making the Liberty League Tournament due to Clarkson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute also each winning Saturday.

The efficient Saints shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor, as 17 of their 25 buckets were assisted on. Lauren Quattrocchi posted 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Kara McDuffee registered 11 points and 13 rebounds for SLU.

The Brewers return to the floor Friday evening at 6 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center, hosting Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League match-up.
