Brewers Come Up Short vs. St. Lawrence, 78-65

Box Score

CANTON, NY (February 7, 2015) – Five different Saints finished in double figures, led by 18 from sophomore Kyle Edwards, as St. Lawrence earned a 78-65 victory over Vassar Saturday afternoon. SLU was hot from behind the arc in the game, hitting a season-best 13 three pointers on 22 attempts to get up on the Brewers. Freshman Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) tied for a game-high 18 points, finishing 7-11 from the field and 4-6 from downtown. Vassar drops to 6-15 on the season (2-10 Liberty League), while St. Lawrence improves to 13-9 (7-6 LL) with the win.

The Brewers had the upper hand early in the contest at Burkman Gym, racing out to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes as the team hit its first four shots. The lead didn't last long, as the Saints countered with a nine-point run of their own to go ahead 11-9 at the 14:41 mark.

VC and St. Lawrence exchanged baskets back and forth, and the game was again tied at 18 a piece with 9:44 to play in the first. The Saints then caught fire in the half's final 10 minutes, starting with an 11-0 run on three triples and a pair of free throws to go up 29-18. Junior Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) finally answered for the Brewers with a three ball to make it 29-21, and a layup from senior Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) had VC only down six with 6:30 remaining.

St. Lawrence put together another big run in the closing minutes of the half, going on a 15-3 tear with a combination of three pointers and freebies to race out to a 44-26 advantage. Vassar got a few points back towards the end of the half, but was still down 14 heading into the break.

Despite outscoring the hosts 32-31 in the second half, the Brewers just couldn't dig themselves out of the hole in the second half. VC would get as close as 11 after a three pointer from freshman Tony Caletti (Mill Valley, CA/Branson) made it 57-46 with 12:18 remaining. St. Lawrence did enough to hold off any comeback bids from the Brewers, as Edwards notched 10 of his points in the half on 4-5 shooting to pace the Saints to the victory.

St. Lawrence won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding VC 34-23. Wasyl notched 12 points for the Brewers, along with two assists and a steal. Senior Brady Condlin finished with 17 points, hitting all three of his attempts from long range while going 4-4 from the charity stripe.

Vassar will be back in action next weekend February 13-14 to host its final Liberty League doubleheader of the season. VC will first tip off against RIT on Friday February 13, then celebrate senior day against Hobart on Saturday the 14th.
