POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 28, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team earned a clean sweep in its spring home opener at Walker Field House Saturday afternoon, besting the United States Coast Guard Academy 9-0. Vassar went up 3-0 in doubles action, then dropped just one set in all six singles matches to secure the shutout win. The Brewers improve to 4-3 on the season in duals, while the Coast Guard moves to 2-1 with the loss.
Juniors Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) got VC started in doubles, winning 8-2 in No. 2 doubles over Michael Melamphy and Benson Errington. Junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and sophomore Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) remained in control throughout the No. 1 doubles match, before sealing an 8-3 victory over the Coast Guard's Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna.
After initially going down 2-3 in the No. 3 doubles match, sophomores Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) battled back to take a 4-3 advantage on Robert Renfrow and John Hu. The duos traded games again, before Litsky and Laso pulled away to take an 8-4 win in the match.
The Brewers took their momentum from doubles right into singles play, going six-for-six to get the 9-0 sweep. The closest match of the day came between Phelps and Fortna in the No. 3 bout, as Phelps found himself down a set after falling 5-7 in the first. He got back on track in the second, claiming a 6-1 win before securing the victory with a 10-6 win in the super tiebreak.
Vassar will have a doubleheader weekend up next starting on Friday, March 6 when the team travels to Cambridge, MA to face MIT at 4:00 pm. The Brewers will then play Babson College the next day in Babson Park, MA at 5:00 pm.
