Snyder Nets 1000th as Vassar Downs Hobart 65-63 on Senior Day

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 14, 2015) - Senior Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) finished with 13 points, including the 1,000th of his career at Vassar, while fellow senior Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) chipped in 18 as the Brewers downed league-leading Hobart 65-63 Saturday night. The win was a historic one for VC, as the Brewers topped the Statesmen for only the third time since 2001 and for the first time since the 2008 season. Senior Connor Rehbaum posted a game-high 22 for Hobart, but Vassar made plays down the stretch and held off a late Statesmen comeback bid to secure the win on senior day. VC moves to 7-16 and 3-11 in the Liberty League with the victory, while Hobart drops to 16-7 (11-3 LL).

With the game tied at 31 to start the second, Hobart got an early edge going up 44-39 at the 15:52 mark in the half. Vassar answered on the ensuing possession, getting a layup from Snyder to come within three. Freshman Tony Caletti (Mill Valley, CA/Branson) then evened the score after hitting one of his three triples on the night with 13:17 to play.

VC retook the lead on a jumper from freshman Spencer Einhorn (Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook), which sparked a 13-0 run for the Brewers to bust the game wide open. The run spanning over seven minutes in the final half put the Brewers ahead 57-44, before Rehbaum finally hit a free throw to halt the Statesmen scoring drought.

Hobart made a game out of it down the stretch, scoring eight unanswered points after the 5:06 mark to cut the VC advantage to 61-56 with 1:23 to play. Facing heavy pressure on the inbound from the Statesmen, the Brewers got the break to find a wide open Smith underneath the hoop to push the lead back to seven.

Smith again stepped up to nail two free throws with 41 seconds to play, and a pair of late buckets from the Statesmen were not enough as the Brewers held on for the two point win.

Vassar saw its largest lead of the game in the first half, as the hosts went up by as many as 17 at the 7:12 mark. VC came out of the gate firing, and finished 5-11 on attempts from downtown while shooting 45.5% from the floor in the half. Hobart came storming back at the end of first, allowing VC only three more points on a 20-3 run. Junior Michael LaValle capped off the scoring spurt for Hobart with a three pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 31.

The Vassar freshman put on one their best displays this season, led by a career-high 11 points from Einhorn on 4-5 shooting. Caletti added nine on a 3-3 night from downtown, while fellow freshman Jesse Browne (Barrington, VT/Deerfield Academy) tallied nine points of his own to help pace the Brewers.

Snyder became just the 13th player in Vassar basketball history to score 1,000 points, hitting the historic mark on a free throw in the first half. Snyder has now amassed 1,002 points in the burgundy and gray, which ranks 12th all-time in school history.

Vassar will play its final road game of the 2014-15 season next week when the team travels to play Hudson Valley counterpart Bard College at 8:00 pm.
