SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 7, 2017) – The Vassar men's swimming team picked up its second dual meet victory of the season Saturday afternoon, claiming nine event victories to best Skidmore 155-131. The Brewers move to 2-1 on the season in head-to-head meets, while the Thoroughbreds drop to 1-2.
"Today was another good performance for us against Liberty League opposition," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "It's great to see so many strong individual efforts, and we're happy to see this group build in the right direction."
Freshman Alex May had two big wins for the Brewers in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:35.18) and 500 free (5:15.76). May had just enough to claim first in the 1000, outtouching Skidmore's top finisher by five tenths of a second. May and freshman teammate Ian LaBash (5:17.59) swam a well-constructed race in the 500, as the pair teamed up to finish 1-2 in the event.
Junior Anthony Walker had a solid race in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:01.11 nearly 14 seconds ahead of the field. Walker went on to win the 100 freestyle, placing first with a time of 50.60.
Senior Greg Cristina had a strong showing in the 50 free, topping the field with a mark of 23.11. He had another win in the 100 fly, claiming the top spot with a mark of 56.57. Sophomore Jonah Strand notched a victory in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a season-best 2:15.51 to tally nine points for the Brewers. His second win of the day came in the 200 yard IM (2:05.26), while Walker was right behind him (2:05.29) to give Vassar a 1-2 finish.
Vassar had the fastest team in the 200 yard medley relay, as Cerutti, Strand, Walker and Cristina combined to go 1:41.65 and win the event.
The Vassar swimming and diving teams will return to meet action next Saturday, November 14 when the teams travel to swim vs. the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
