GENEVA, NY (November 4, 2015) – Five different Heron players scored a goal, as No. 3 William Smith College topped Vassar 5-0 in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament Wednesday afternoon. The top-seeded Herons took an early lead and never looked back, advancing to the Liberty League Championship for the 13th straight season.
William Smith improves to 15-1-1 on the year and has now secured 15 consecutive shutout victories. Vassar ends the season 9-7-2, securing the program's 15th winning season and second under head coach Corey Holton. William Smith outshot VC 22-6, while the Brewers managed a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Krista Longo broke into the scoring column in the 6th minute on a cross from Evie Manning from the right wing to give the hosts an early lead. Kara Shue made it 2-0 in the 18th minute off a redirect in front of the six yard box.
Vassar's best chance of the opening half came in the 28th minute, after the Brewers earned a corner kick on the right side. Freshman Dahlia Chroscinski (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) fired off VC's first shot of the afternoon, but it was blocked and cleared from the box to keep the Brewers scoreless.
Brie Ruane gave the Herons a 3-0 advantage in the 33rd minute off a dish from Kara Shue. The Herons held an 11-2 edge in shots at the half, while Nichols finished with three saves at the break.
Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) forced William Smith keeper Veronica Romines to make her first save of the day in the opening minutes of the second half, taking a shot from the top of the 18. The Herons added their fourth goal in the 60th minute, getting a goal from Megan Barwick off another assist from Shue. Manning notched her first of the game in the 65th minute to make it a 5-0 advantage.
Senior Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with a game-high six saves, while Romines finished with two stops for the Herons.
