GENEVA, NY (November 4, 2015) – The Vassar College field hockey team saw their season come to an end Wednesday evening, falling to No. 6 William Smith College 4-0 in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals from McCooey Field. Sophomore Hannah Wood netted all four goals for the Herons, who advance to the Finals to take on the second-seed University of Rochester Saturday.
The Brewers controlled the early portion of the game, firing the first four shots of the contest including an attempt off a long run from junior
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams). Sophomore
Storm Sideleau (Contoocook, NH/Kimball Union Academy) also tested William Smith keeper Biz Chirco, but was denied on a tough angle.
William Smith was able to finally get the ball out of its own end midway through the half, earning the first penalty corner of the half for the Herons. The corner was clinical for the home team, as Maura Moran and Cydney Conley set up the 25
th goal of the season by sophomore Hannah Wood. Wood took the stick stop from the top of the circle and slammed the ball into the right corner for the early 1-0 lead.
Just 5:22 later in the half, Wood was at it again on a penalty corner, as she collected a deflection off a give-and-go and buried it into the cage for a 2-0 advantage for the Herons. William Smith earned two more corners, but freshman net minder
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) made four saves to keep the game where it was before the half.
Just after the intermission, Wood had a great opportunity but Amico was there to make a kick save on a drive to the near post. The
William Smith sophomore would complete the hat trick with 19:07 to go in the game, as she deflected in a shot from Alessandra Patrizio into the right side of the cage. The Brewers came out of a timeout and nearly pulled to within two, but a shot by Bracken off a cross from senior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) missed just wide right.
William Smith finished the scoring on the evening with just under seven minutes to go, as Wood added her fourth of the game and her 28
th of the season unassisted on a drive to the left hand corner. VC had two corners moments after that goal, as the Brewers put five shots on goal but Chirco was there to keep the Brewers off the board on the night.
The final score does not tell the entire score of the game, as Vassar controlled the play in William Smith's end for much of the evening. The Herons held a 16-14 edge in shots in the contest, while the Brewers edged their hosts 6-5 in penalty corners. Chirco made nine saves in the win for the Herons, while Amico chalked up five stops to end her fantastic freshman campaign.
The Brewers finish the season with a 12-6 record, earning their third straight trip to the Liberty League Tournament after a 3-3 mark in conference play.
