Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

MacMillan Leads Women’s Volleyball Past Stevens, 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 7, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team erased a seven-point deficit in the first set, and used that momentum to capture a much-needed 3-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference action from Kenyon Hall Wednesday. VC earned the win with scores of 26-24, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-20.

The key to the triumph for the Brewers (9-9) was its ability to fight, which was showcased during the opening set Wednesday. With visiting Stevens leading 20-13, Vassar began to make a slow comeback, trimming the advantage to 21-18 after a kill by freshman Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco).

The visiting Ducks (11-9) responded with two points, but the Brewers did not go away, chalking up the next six points to take a 24-23 lead. After a kill from Stevens' Mary Tobin, Vassar forced back-to-back hitting errors by the Ducks to take the set.

The second set belonged to Stevens, as the Ducks chalked up 14 kills to even the match at a game apiece. Vassar stormed out to the gates in the third set, earning 12 of the first 14 points in the stanza to take a 10-point advantage. Stevens chipped away at the lead and got as close as 23-20, but the Brewers put the game away thanks to a Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) finish.

In the fourth set, sophomore Alex Sams' (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) right arm came alive, chalking up four of her six terminations on the night including back-to-back kills the end the match. The beginning of the fourth set was back and fourth, but the Brewers took the lead for good after a 17-17 tie, recording a 4-0 run late in the stanza to take control.

The balanced attack for the Brewers was due to the very strong play from freshman setter Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado), who stuffed the stat sheet Wednesday. MacMillan finished with a career-best 33 assists, chalking up nine digs, three assisted blocks and two aces as well.

Classmate Devan Gallagher finished with a team-high 12 terminations, her 10th double-digit contest of the season for the Brewers. Gallagher also posted six digs and four blocks, and junior Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) added 11 kills and nine ups in the victory. Corham concluded the match with eight balls pounded down, two blocks and two aces as well.

Defensively, the Brewers saw lots of contributions, including the team-best 22 digs from senior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia). Freshman Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) added 11 digs as well for VC, which finished the nine with 40 kills on 135 swings (.141%).

Stevens got a game-best 19 kills from Christina Sciarra, while Brianna Evans added 14 kills and 10 digs in the loss. Sydni Horner led the match in digs with 26, as the Ducks also finished with 12 service aces led by the three each from Evans, Horner and Emily Piekarski.

Vassar College will have nine days off before hosting a Liberty League crossover in the Athletics and Fitness Center Friday, October 16. VC will take on Bard College at 4 p.m., followed by a match with Skidmore College at 6 p.m. in the AFC.
