POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 30, 2015) - The Vassar women's swimming team was powered by 11 event victories, including a school record from freshman Mia Moraru in the 3-meter diving event as the Brewers topped SUNY-New Paltz 163-128.
Â
Diving in just her third collegiate meet, Moraru dazzled with a mark of 245.24 in the 3-meter, 6-dive event at Kresge Pool. The combined score edged the previous record of 244.57 set by alumnus Kelly Wilkinson last season. Moraru also picked nine points for VC with a victory in the 1-meter dive event (221.63).
Â
Moraru was not the only freshman to impress, as fellow first-years Sammy Stone, Kael Ragnini and Hayley Schultz combined for four event wins. Stone was first in the 1000 free, cruising to a time of 10:44.04 to secure her first win of the night. Stone went on to finish first in the 500 free to push the Brewers back ahead in the team scoring late, hitting a time of 5:18.71. Stone also notched second in 100 free (55.11) finishing just four hundredths of a second off the leader and swimming the fastest time of any Brewer this season.
Â
Ragnini finished first in the 200 backstroke, swimming three seconds ahead of the field with a mark of 2:18.06. She also notched third place in the 200 free (2:02.77).
Â
Schultz took first overall in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:33.44 with senior teammate Anna Kuo (2:35.00) claiming second. The pair flipped positions earlier in the 100 breast, with Kuo (1:11.31) setting a new career best and Schultz (1:11.80) finishing just behind.
Â
Junior Julia Cunningham was clutch again for the Brewers picking up three event victories on the night. She started things off with a mark of 2:08.73 in the 200 fly, a little over a second off a NCAA B-Cut qualifying time (2:07.58). Cunningham was also close to a B-Cut (57:07) in the 100 fly, finishing in 58:93 to take first. She finished up her night with a victory in the 400 IM, winning the event by nearly nine seconds in 4:41.46.
 Â
In relay action, the team of Ragnini, Kuo, Cunningham and Frye took first in the 200 medley for 11 points, finishing in 1:54.20, nearly three seconds quicker than the fastest Brewer time this season.
Â
The Brewers went 2-3 in the 400 yard free relay, with Frye, Ragnini, Schmidt and Stone posting the top VC time (3:50.52). Harrington, Corbett, Kuo and Nelson (3:55.36) swam a strong race as well, outpacing the New Paltz 'B' team by nearly six tenths of a second.
