What To Watch ForIt's been a long and winding road for these two seniors,
Paige Benson (Elk Grove, CA/Bradshaw Christian School) and
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia), as both finish their home careers this evening. Both have been great leaders for the Vassar team this season, and each will be honored prior to the game for their hard work and dedication to the women's volleyball program over the last few seasons. Arrive a little early for the pre-game festivities Wednesday evening, and hear about the accomplishments of both Benson and Hallum.
A Look At New Paltz (18-9, 8-1 SUNYAC)The Hawks have had a strong season, finishing regular season action this week with four matches, three against Liberty League teams. The Hawks have been great on neutral sites this season, going 10-3 but are just 3-3 in true road matches. New Paltz is second in the SUNYAC in hitting percentage with a .202 attacking rate, and has posted 12.16 kills per set, also second in the league. New Paltz has been very strong in serve receive, allowing just 1.63 service aces per game, which ranks as second in the SUNYAC.
Offensively, the Hawks have been led by Morgan Roessler, who comes into the weekend with a hitting percentage of .319, third-best in the conference. Teammate Becca Borquist has been the go-to player on the outside, as she has pounded down a total of 3.80 kills per set, second-highest in the SUNYAC. Setter Maddie Zwicku averages 10.06 assists per game, and Borquist and Melannie Aquino each rank in the top six in the SUNYAC in aces per set. Defensively, Roessler is fifth in the SUNYAC in blocks per set with 0.80 rejections a game, and Rachel Pierson has a team-high 307 digs. Teammates Anna Paulik and Meg Kinee have chalked up 294 and 251 digs, respectively. Head coach Matt Giufre is in his 14
th season at New Paltz, helping the Hawks to five NCAA Tournament appearances over his tenure across the river.
Against New Paltz All-TimeVassar is 12-21 against the Hawks dating back to when records started to be recorded in 1988, as the series dates back to long before that. Vassar will be looking for its first win over NP since 2008, as the Hawks have earned the last eight meetings between the two teams.
One's EnoughThe Brewers are currently 13-13 on the season, and are trying to finish at or above .500 this season for the 13
th time since 2000. VC hasn't had back-to-back seasons below the .500 mark since 1997 (10-17) and 1998 (13-16).
Crack That WhipFreshman
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) comes into the week leading the Brewers in kills with 254. Gallagher would be the first freshman to lead VC in kills since Chloe McGuire in 2009.
Drive For FiveThis season, Vassar College has played no five-set matches this season, which would be the first time in program history that has happened.
Now ServingThe Brewers have served at a rate of .891 this season, which would be a program record if it sticks. It would eclipse the percentage of .888 set back in 2006.
What A SierraJunior defensive specialist
Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) is having a historic season serving the ball for the Brewers, as she has chalked up just six errors on 219 service attempts for a percentage of .973. That rate would be a school record.
I'm a GamerFreshman
Devan Gallagher is the only player this season to have played in all 84 sets for the Brewers.
The Adventures Of Alex MackSophomore
Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) has really improved this year offensively, improving her kill total from 81 last season to 125 as a sophomore.
