POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 13, 2015) – The Vassar women's swimming and diving team spilt its first tri-meet of the season against Trinity College and Mount Holyoke Tuesday afternoon, coming out ahead of the Bantams 148-140, while falling to the Lyons 161-137. Returning from a weeklong training trip in California less than 24 hours prior, the Brewer women put together several quality races in the team's final home meet of the year.
Senior Olivia Harries (Temple Terrace, FL/Lee Academy) posted a season-best time of 10:57.47 in the 1000 yard freestyle and is the first Brewer to finish under 11 minutes all season. The time was good for second place, while freshman Cali Corbett (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) took home a fourth place finish with a lifetime best mark of 11:42.90 in the event.
Harries went on to finish as the top Brewer in the 200 yard freestyle, posting a season-best mark of 2:02.59. Harries wrapped up her day as an individual with a second place overall finish in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:24.73.
Sophomore Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) posted two individual event victories on the day, her first coming in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.94. She notched another victory in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 59.03, while also notching a second place finish in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.18.
Senior Kelly Wilkinson (Oceanside, CA/Vista) notched victories in both the 1 meter and 3 meter dives, posting scores of 196.05 and 199.12 (respectively).
In the 100 yard backstroke, senior Elizabeth Balter (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) was the top finisher for Vassar, finishing in 1:06.40. Balter was also the top Brewer in the 200 yard backstroke, posting a time of 2:22.91 to take fourth in the field.
Junior Anna Kuo (Floral Park, NY/Townsend Harris) was the fastest Brewer in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:14.29 to take third in the field.
The 400 yard medley relay team of Nelson, Kuo, Cunningham and Balter was tops for the Brewers, combining to finish in 4:15.60 and third overall. Vassar's 200 yard freestyle team of Balter, Corbett, Nelson and Harries took second in the event with a time of 1:47.81, while the team of Frye, Kuo, Pan and Schmidt claimed third in 1:49.10. The times were both critical to help Vassar edge Trinity in the final event of the meet.
The four seniors of the Vassar women's swimming & diving team also celebrated senior day with their teammates in a pre-meet ceremony today at Kresge Pool.
The Vassar women's swimming & diving team will return to competition this coming weekend at the Seven Sisters Championships. The Brewers will travel to South Hadley, MA for the two-day event starting on Saturday, January 17.
