POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 13, 2015) – The Vassar men's swimming & diving team edged Trinity College 145-125 Tuesday afternoon in the team's first meet in over a month. Returning from a weeklong training trip in California less than 24 hours prior, the Brewer men competed neck and neck with the Bantams throughout the day before pulling away in the meet's final events to earn the victory. VC now stands 3-3 on the year with the win, while Trinity moves to 0-6.
Freshman Jonah Strand (Woodstock, NY/Onteora Central) finished with two victories on the day, the first coming in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.75. The time was a career and season best for Strand, who also set a new career-best in his 200 breaststroke win with a time of 2:16.45. Strand went on to take second in the 200 yard individual medley relay with a time of 2:04.92.
Senior Luc Amodio (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) took a victory in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 56.87 to outpace the field. Sophomore Chris Cerutti (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) was not far behind finishing in third with a time of 58.05. Amodio also notched a second place finish for the Brewers in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.54. Cerutti and senior Chuck Herrmann led the way for the Brewers in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing second and third with times of 2:05.64 and 2:13.43 (respectively).
Junior Greg Christina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) topped the field in the 50 yard freestyle, touching the wall first with a time of 22.72.
Senior Rafael Ricaurte (Astoria, NY/Regis) picked up crucial points for the Brewers as the lone diving representative between the two schools, finishing with a score of 118.87 in the 3 meter dives and 160.65 in the 1 meter dives.
In the 1000 yard freestyle, sophomore Walter Gabriel (Houston, TX/Cypress Ranch) took second with a time of 11:58.20, while freshman Daniel Choi (North Hollywood, CA/North Hollywood) finished third in 13:01.34.
Vassar went 2-3-4 in the 200 yard freestyle, led by junior Isaiah Hale (Dansville, NY/Dansville) with a time of 2:00.40, while freshman Kyle Gray (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mountain East) (2:05.02) and senior Marcos Vargas (Salinas, CA/Alisal) (2:11.28) took third and fourth respectively.
Vassar's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Christina, Walker, Hale and Quinn notched a victory over the Bantams in the final event of the day, finishing in 1:32.70. In the men's 400 yard medley relay, the VC relay teams finished 2-3.
The four seniors of the Vassar men's swimming & diving team also celebrated senior day with their teammates in a pre-meet ceremony today at Kresge Pool.
The Vassar men's swim team will return to action next week on Wednesday, January 21 in a dual meet against Montclair State at Kresge Pool. The event is slated to start at 6:00 pm.
