Box Score (POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 7, 2014) – Five different Brewers finished with a goal on the day, as Vassar cruised to a 5-1 win over Farmingdale State on the final day of the 2014 Vassar Invitational. Vassar finished 2-0 on the weekend, and was the only team to finish with wins in both games of the invite. The Brewers move to 4-0-1 on the year with the victory, while Farmingdale falls to 1-3 with the loss.
The teams felt each other out in the opening half, but it was Vassar that struck first in the 36
th minute. Senior
Zach Nasipak (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton), who was voted the tournament's MVP, headed in a great service from junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to put the Brewers on the board first.
The Rams were able to respond in the 40
th minute, as freshman Samuele Riva took a turnover into the box and scored to even the sides at one. Less than a minute later, freshman
Noah Snider (Laramie, WY/Laramie) had the answer for VC, as he buried a shot off a fantastic cross from fellow freshman
Tanner Sands (Draper, UT/Juan Diego).
The second half was all Brewers, as the hosts opened up on their 2-1 lead first with a goal from junior
Yaniv Yaffe (Reisterstown, MD/Beth Tfiloh). His header shot in the 52
nd minute was his first goal of the season, while senior teammate
Justin Mitchell (Layton, UT/Northridge) provided the assist.
Junior
Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made it 4-1 in the 67
th minute after the Rams goalie came way off his mark to play a ball outside the box. Veneziale collected the ball after a failed clear from Farmingdale and scored on the open net. In the 82
nd minute, freshman
Jose Novas (Doral, FL/Gulliver Prepatory) rounded out the scoring for the Brewers, after
Gavin Jennings intercepted a pass. Jennings played a through ball to an open Novas, who scored on the left side to give Vassar its fifth goal of the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adman Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), junior midfielder
Gavin Jennings and senior defender
Zach Nasipak were all named to the all-tournament team. Nasipak was selected as the tournament MVP.
In the day's first game, Elms College defeated SUNY-New Paltz 1-0 on a goal from freshman Chris Dabkowski.
VC will return to the pitch this Wednesday, September 10 at 4:00 pm when the team welcomes Manhattanville College (2-1) to Gordon Field.
