Brewers Fall to Stevens 1-0 on Day One of Engineering Cup

Box Score

HOBOKEN, NJ (September 6, 2014) – Stevens senior Ann Heine scored the game's only goal, as the Ducks held on to top Vassar 1-0 in the opening game of the 11th Annual Stevens Engineering Cup. Stevens outshot VC 33-11 in the match, and limited the Brewers to only four shots on goal on the day. Junior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with 13 saves in the game; the second most in her career. The Brewers move to 1-1 on the year with the loss, while Stevens improves to 2-1.

Stevens got the eventual game-winning goal in 65th minute, as senior Mariah Cleveland played in a corner kick from the left side. The Brewers were unable to clear, and after Nichols saved the initial shot, senior Ann Heine collected the rebound in the box and scored. Vassar could not find a rhythm offensively for much of the second half, and struggled to produce chances against a tough Ducks defense.

One of the better opportunities in the game for Vassar came in the 89th minute, when sophomore Emily Krebs (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) took a through ball down the left hand side. The Stevens keeper went off her mark to try and clear the ball outside the 18, but retreated after a deflection stayed with the Brewers. Krebs' shot in traffic from 25 yards away sailed wide right, and VC was left with only a seconds until time expired.

The Ducks put Nichols to work early in goal at the start of the first half, as the hosts produced a pair of chances in the opening minutes. A shot from Stevens freshman Megan Lynes in the 2nd minute produced a corner for the Ducks, and the Brewers needed a team save to deflect an on-target header shot from sophomore Raba Nassif in the 3rd.

Vassar only managed six shots in the first half to Stevens' 17, but kept the Ducks out of the scoring column as Nichols finished with six saves in the period.

Vassar will return to action tomorrow at noon when the team faces SUNY-Cortland on the final day of the Engineering Cup.
