Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) scored twice and added an assist, as Vassar cruised to a 4-0 victory over Thomas College Friday in the opening night of the 26
th Annual Betty Richey Tournament. The Brewers remained in control throughout the course of the contest, and were dominant on defense allowing only three shots to the Terriers. The win advances VC to the tournament championship tomorrow against the day's earlier winner, Manhattanville College.
Wiebe got into the scoring column early, tallying a goal on a pass from sophomore
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) in the 16
th minute. Her shot beat the keeper to right corner, and put the Brewers up 1-0. Freshman
Storm Sideleau (Hopkinton, NH/Kimball Union academy) added to the lead later on in the half, taking a rebound from Wiebe to score and put her side ahead 2-0.
Wiebe's second goal of the night came in the 49
th minute, as junior
Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) fed a crisp pass across the middle to find her teammate wide open. Wiebe finished on an open net, giving VC a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) added some insurance in the in the 59
th minute deflecting a well hit ball from senior
Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) into the upper left corner to make it 4-0.
Junior Goalie
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) saved the only shot directed at goal by Thomas on the night. In the tournament's opening game, Manhattanville topped Smith College 3-1. Forward Kristen Savage had two goals for the Valiants, who now advance to the tournament championship at 2:30 tomorrow.
The Betty Richey Tournament will resume tomorrow at noon when Smith and Thomas meet in the consolation game at noon. Vassar will face Manhattanville at 2:30 pm in the final to close out the weekend.
