Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 3, 2014) – Vassar scored two of its three goals in the game's opening 15 minutes, as the Brewers went on to top Western Connecticut State 3-0 Wednesday afternoon. Three different Brewers recorded a goal in the contest, and VC now moves to 2-0-1 on the season with the victory. Western Connecticut drops to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
In the first half, the Brewer offense was firing on all cylinders early as the team produced offensive looks in the opening minutes. Vassar finally capitalized on an opportunity in the 13
th minute, as junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) brought a ball down the left side. A deflected pass found the foot of sophomore
Andreas Freund (San Francisco, CA/Marin Acad.), who buried a shot past the Colonial keeper in the right corner.
VC didn't waste time putting away its second goal of the game, as freshman
Tanner Sands (Draper, UT/Juan Diego) played a beautiful ball into the box from the right wing in the 15
th minute. Junior
Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) reeled in the cross on the left side, then beat the keeper in the left corner to give his team a 2-0 lead. The Brewers held that advantage throughout the first half, as a relentless Vassar defense allowed only two shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Vassar carried that momentum into the second, as Palmer was only inches away from two goals towards the start the half. His first shot in the 55
th minute sailed just wide of the right post, while a second attempt only seconds later deflected off the cross bar and out of bounds. The offense finally got its elusive third goal in the 85
th minute, as sophomore
Stephen Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) took a well-placed pass from freshman
Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School). Jennings hit his shot in the bottom left corner, scoring his first goal of the season to put Vassar ahead 3-0.
Vassar finished with a season-high 27 shots in the contest, while allowing only four to Western Connecticut. Sophomore goalie
Adam Warner finished with two saves and earned his third shutout of the year in the victory.
Vassar will return to the pitch this weekend as the squad hosts Elms College, Farmingdale State and SUNY-New Paltz for the Vassar Invitational Tournament. The Brewers will face off with Elms at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 6, before playing Farmingdale State on Sunday September 7 at 2:00 pm.
