The goal was the first of the season for Hess, which came at a critical time for the Brewers to give the team its first conference victory and first road win of the season. Freshman
Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School) recorded his first goal on the year to get Vassar going in the 15
th minute, after a cross from fellow freshman
Alex Gonzales (Aliso Viejo, CA/Mater Dei) from the right wing found its way behind the Skidmore defense. Smith converted on the breakaway, calmly tucking his strike inside the right post to put his side up 1-0. The Brewers nearly doubled their lead two minutes later, but Gonzales's header dropped just over the crossbar.
The Thoroughbreds took control in the second half, and came close to equalizing, as Brock Bakewell played Adam Beek with a ball over the top of the Vassar defense. Beek's chip sailed high, and the Brewers held their advantageheading into the final 15 minutes.
Skidmore continued to press and was rewarded in the 78th minute, as Beek connected with Bakewell on a counter attack to bring the Thoroughbreds level. Bakewell raced onto Beek's feed and muscled passed his defender before slotting a strike in off the right post.
Hess had the answer for VC only minutes later, after a free kick from junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) was placed perfectly into the box. Hess headed the ball home in the 80
th minute, regaining the lead for Vassar and giving the team a much-needed victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) recorded four saves in the contest for Vassar.
