Box Score UNION, NJ (September 24, 2014) – Kean University used a three-goal first half surge, while adding a fourth in the second to take down Vassar 4-0 Wednesday evening. Despite managing 18 shots with seven on goal in the contest, the Brewers were held scoreless for the third time this year; all of which have occurred as the visiting team. VC moves to 6-3-1 on the season and 0-2-1 on the road, while Kean improves to 5-3-1.
Kean had a scoring opportunity not even two minutes into the game, as the Cougars earned a penalty shot after a foul was committed by the Brewers in the box. Freshman Sevag Kherlopian stepped up to take the penalty, but his attempt was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Adamn Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) to keep the game scoreless.
The Brewers saw the worst case scenario play out in the 11
th minute, after Kean sophomore Robert Barrera notched the first goal of the game on a shot from the left side. The ball beat Warner to the right in the corner of the net, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage. Only 20 seconds later, junior Pablo Valle found an opening in the defense off the restart and buried a chip shot past an outstretched Warner. Before Vassar could blink, Kean had gone up 2-0 on back-to-back scores.
VC saw one of its best chances at net in the 31
st minute, after junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent a pass into the middle for freshman
Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School). Smith took a one time blast off the right foot at goal, but the diving Cougar keeper was there to deflect the ball away and keep the Brewers scoreless.
A defensive breakdown led to the Cougars' third goal in the 40
th minute, after two Brewer defenders collided in the defensive end allowing Kean's Steven Zamudio to get a one-on-one with the keeper. Zamudio dribbled past a charging Warner in the 18 yard box and scored on the open net to give the hosts a three goal advantage.
Despite outshooting the Cougars 12-9 in the second half, Vassar could not get an attempt in the net as Kean goalie Brad Watkins finished with four saves in the period and seven overall. Kevin Olaya added the fourth goal of the game on a free kick in the 60
th minute, as the sophomore bended in a shot from 25 yards out over the goalie's head. VC made a number of runs into the Cougars' defensive end into the final minutes, but to no avail as the Brewers were held without a goal.
Vassar will look to rebound this coming Saturday, September 27 when the team opens up Liberty League play at Skidmore. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
