Non-Conference Finale: Vassar Men's Soccer Notes #6: Kean

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 23, 2014) – The Vassar men's soccer team will be on the road in Union, NJ to face Kean University this coming Wednesday.

What to Look For:
Coming off a narrow, 1-0 win against rivals SUNY New Paltz, the Brewers will be looking to maintain winning form against on the road against the Kean University Cougars to give them their seventh win of the season.
 
Last Time Out:  
An eighth minute goal by Noah Block, his first of the season, sealed a 1-0 victory against SUNY New Paltz at home on Saturday afternoon. Goalkeepers Matt Marcelino and Sebastien Lasseur combined for a total of 6 saves to keep the Hawks at bay in a closely contested game.
 
A Look at the Cougars:
Kean currently holds a 4-3-1 record and is coming off a win and a loss in its past two games. The Cougars managed a 2-1 win against Haverford College on September 17 with goals by Sevag Kherloplan and Steven Zamudio. The Cougars fell to Rowan University in a 3-1 loss on September 20.
 
Sophomore midfielder Robert Barrera leads the Cougars offensively with two goals and two assists in eight games. Freshman forward Sevag Kherlopan also poses a threat up top, having scored two goals in six games. Keeper Nick Pavlichko has made a total 21 saves this season to average just 0.77 goals against per game.
 
Previous Encounter:
Last year when the Brewers met the Cougars at home, the Cougars picked up a 3-2 win, thanks to a brace by former players Gordon Lyng and Akwasi Adu. Now senior, Tim Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente), managed to net a pair of goals for the Brewers to keep the game close.
 
Team Leader:
Junior forward Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) has stepped up as a major attacking threat for the Brewers, having started all nine games while tallying three goals and an assist.
 
First Time for Everything:
Four upperclassmen have recorded their first career goals as Brewers this season, as sophomore Andreas Freund (San Francisco, CA/Main Acad.), sophomore Noah Bloch (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) junior Elias Kim (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and junior Yaniv Yaffe (Reisterstown, MD/Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community) have all entered the scoring column through the team's first nine games. Both Freund and Bloch have scored game-winning goals for Vassar.   
 
Helping Out:
Junior midfielder Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) has accumulated five assists in nine games, which currently ranks 16th in the nation and first in the Liberty League. Jennings remains tied for eighth all-time in Vassar history for assists in a season (5). 
 
Going Down that Road:
The Brewers will play only their third road game of the season against Kean, and the squad will be looking for their first win outside of Gordon Field in the matchup. Vassar tied Mt. St. Mary 0-0 in its first road game on August 31, then dropped its only other away contest on September 17 to Stevens Tech 2-0. Despite averaging 2.28 goals per game at home this season, VC has yet to score on the road.    
 
Super Starters:
Freshmen Tanner Sands (Draper, UT/Juan Diego)  and Hayden Van Brewer (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional), juniors Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura), Cosmo Veneziale, and Nick Hess (Troy, NY/Averill Park) and senior Zach Nasipak Chandler, AV/Hamilton) have started all nine games for the Brewers this season.
 
Looking Ahead:
The Brewers will begin conference play on September 27, playing their Liberty League opener on the road in Saratoga Springs against the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College, who currently hold a 4-3-1 record.
