Brewers Drop Pair of Women’s Volleyball League Matches Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 20, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball squad, coming off a pair of big Liberty League wins Friday evening, could not continue its run in dropping both conference matches Saturday in action from the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The Brewers (7-8, 2-2 Liberty League) fell in four games to Rochester Institute of Technology with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, losing to No. 16 Clarkson University in the nightcap 28-26, 25-20 and 25-19.

RIT 3, Vassar 1
Vassar struggled offensively against Rochester Institute of Technology, but played well defensively against one of the best offensive teams in the conference. The Brewers scored four of the game's first five points, but RIT (8-5, 1-2 Liberty) battled back to take a 14-10 lead. The first set would remain close, with Vassar taking a 23-22 lead after an ace by freshman Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon).

Vassar College could not hold on though, as the Brewers dropped the last three points to fall 25-23. VC responded though with a big second set victory to knot the match at one, as Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) pounded seven kills in the game. The last two games would not go the way of the Brewers though, as RIT combined for 21 kills in the final two sets.

The Brewers got a solid performance out of libero Chloe Hallum (Baltimore, MD/Olympia), who chalked up 22 digs and an ace. Mosley led VC with a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs, while senior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) added 11 kills on 22 swings, adding four blocks.

Fellow senior Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) finished with eight terminations for VC, and Tiajoloff added 33 assists and seven digs. The Brewers posted a 39-24-129 (.119) hitting clip against RIT, and posted a narrow 58-57 lead in the dig category.

No. 16 Clarkson 3, Vassar 0
The Brewers played some strong volleyball against the defending Liberty League champions, but in the end the Golden Knights (15-2, 4-0 Liberty) were too much as VC fell in three. The Golden Knights posted 49 kills Saturday, including 18 in the opening set.

In that first frame, the Brewers pushed CU to the limit, holding game point at 24-23 but Clarkson chalked up two straight points for a 25-24 edge. Vassar fought back with a pair of points to again have game point, but the Golden Knights chalked up three in a row to take the 28-26 win.

In the second set, the game was back-and-forth with Vassar taking its last lead at 15-14 after a kill from freshman Paige Lerman (San Rafael, CA/Jewish Comm. Of The Bay). Clarkson proceeded to tally five straight, taking control of the set and earning a 2-0 lead in the match. In the final set, CU jumped out in front early and never looked back, picking up its eighth straight win.

Mosley and Pitre each finished with seven kills to lead the way for Vassar at the net, while Hallum chalked up 18 digs in only three sets. Cardillo added four total blocks and five terminations, while Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) booked nine helpers and eight digs.

The Brewers are off until Thursday evening, when they play host in Kenyon Hall to Hunter College at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
