Brewer Field Hockey Blanks Ramapo Saturday, 2-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 20, 2014) -- Vassar College upped its record to 7-1 on the season, marking the best eight-game start in program history after earning a decisive 2-0 win over Ramapo College in non-conference action Saturday from Weinberg Field.

Vassar (7-1) has now won its last five games at home, and also posted its fifth shutout of the season, which ties for the program's single season record set last year. The Brewers put a ton of pressure on the Roadrunners (1-8) early, but keeper Emily Wisneski was there to make nine stops in the opening frame.

The Brewers would need more than the allotted 35 minutes of the first half to break the lid on the scoring. Ramapo was whistled for a penalty corner, and while Vassar College was setting up the clock hit zero. In collegiate field hockey, the corner is allowed to continue until a goal has been scored or the zone has been cleared.

After VC earned another penalty corner, the hosts would finally get on the board, as Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) inserted, and then went to the back post where she deflected an Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) shot home for her first tally of the year.

Vassar College continued to keep the Roadrunners hemmed in their own zone in the second half, and after Wisneski made six more saves the Brewers doubled their score. Sophomore Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) tipped a shot from Cunningham in front of the cage at 51:01 of the game and by Wisneski for her fourth strike of the year.

From that point, the stingy VC defense would hold strong, holding Ramapo without a shot on goal for the contest. The Brewers outshot their visitors Saturday 27-3, and held a 14-2 edge in penalty corners. Wisneski chalked up 17 saves on the afternoon for RC, while Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) added another shutout to her ledger.

Vassar College will open Liberty League play on Wednesday evening, hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 6 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
