Penn Earns 300th Win As Brewers Finish Second In Seven Sisters Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 14, 2014) – The Brewers witnessed history Sunday, as 18th season head coach Jonathan Penn earned his 300th career women's volleyball win as the Brewers finished second at the Seven Sisters Tournament with a 3-1 record on the weekend. The Brewers earned a three-game sweep of Mount Holyoke in the morning to give Penn his accomplishment, while falling in the title match to Wellesley College in three games.

Vassar 3, Mount Holyoke 0
The Brewers had no problem in helping get Penn his 300th win Sunday morning, as Vassar College rolled to a 25-16, 25-11, and 25-12 victory. The Brewers connected on a season-high hitting percentage, posting a .377 attacking rate in earning the win.

In the opening set, Vassar (5-6) used a 12-3 run early on to open up a large lead, cruising to a 1-0 lead in the match. The arms came alive in the second game for the hosts, as Vassar posted 13 kills on 25 attempts along with holding the Lyons (2-6) to just three kills and seven errors in game two.

In the final set, Vassar upped the offensive attack even more, posting 15 kills on 19 attacks, the best hitting set of the season thus far for the Brewers. Down the stretch, senior Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) capped the win with three straight kills to give Penn his milestone victory.

Freshman Paige Lerman (San Rafael, CA/Jewish Comm. Of The Bay) paced the Brewers with a match and career-high 10 kills, hitting a very strong .692 (10-1-13) on the match. Mosley was also very efficient with a .500 attacking rate (9-1-16), while Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) and Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School Of San Francisco) added six and five kills, respectively.

Freshman Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) had 27 assists and her career-high assist percentage with a .500 percent success rate on passes, while the Brewers also had a strong match with the serve, adding 15 aces. Mosley led VC with six aces, while Cardillo, Tiajoloff and freshman Ashley Hoyle (Willingford, PA/Strath Haven) each had two.

Wellesley 3, Vassar 0
The Blue of Wellesley College captured the 2014 Seven Sisters Tournament with the victory over the Brewers, marking the second consecutive season that WC has earned the tournament title. Wellesley also has now won 13 Seven Sisters championships on the volleyball court, most of all of the Seven Sisters schools. The Blue won the match with scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-18.

The Brewers looked like they had the first set in hand, but Wellesley battled back to earn the opening set after trailing by as many as four points late in the set. With the score 20-16 in favor of the hosts, WC battled back to tie the set at 21. VC won the next two points, but the Blue rattled off four straight to earn the 1-0 match lead.

In the second period, the Blue (6-2) led for the entire of the set in taking going up two games on the Brewers. In the final set of the weekend for Vassar, the Brewers kept the match close but the title winning Blue finished the game on a 7-2 run to earn the championship.

Mosley paced all hitters with 14 kills for the Brewers, adding seven digs as well for Vassar. Junior Chloe Hallum (Baltimore, MD/Olympia) chalked up a team-best 21 digs for Vassar, and Tiajoloff added 30 assists, six digs and two solo blocks. Senior Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) also had seven terminations and two aces for Vassar. After the conclusion of the tournament, Mosley and Miller were each named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament squad. Below is the full Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team.

The Brewers are back in action next Friday evening with the first Liberty League matches of the season, taking on Bard College and St. Lawrence University in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, with action starting at 4 p.m. at BC.
