Oneonta applied pressure early on in the day, as rain began falling in the first half and continued for the duration of match. After producing an assortment of ambitious shot attempts, the Red Dragons got their first real look in the 21
st minute directly off a corner kick. After senior Mitchell Cain played in a nice ball from the left side, sophomore Hans Purttell found himself open on the far post to put a head on the ball. His header deflected off a Brewer defender before going in the net, and gave Oneonta an early 1-0 lead.
The best chance for Vassar in the first came off a free kick in the 23rd minute, when senior
Zach Nasipak directed a ball off the head towards the right side of the net. Oneonta goalkeeper Vincent Pellegrino was ready however, as the senior moved into position and scooped up the attempt to keep the Brewers scoreless.
The Red Dragons were clinical in the second half, holding possession while creating a host of opportunities throughout the period. Oneonta got its second goal in the 58
th minute, after freshman Cory Santangelo took an open shot from the right side that beat sophomore goalie
Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) in the left corner. The visitors increased the lead to three in the 71
st minute, after a nice through ball from junior Dylan Williams found a streaking Colin Volpe. The junior buried his shot into the right corner past an outstretched Warner, putting the Red Dragons up 3-0.
Oneonta added insurance in the 79
th minute, after a turnover outside the box allowed senior Justin Rivera to chip the keeper. Vassar scored the first goal allowed by the Red Dragons all season in the 85
th minute, after a deflected pass from junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) put the ball in front of fellow junior
Elias Kim (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack). Kim took a touch in the box before powering a shot into the middle of the net to give Vassar its only goal and avoid the shutout.
