Box Score BROCKPORT, NY (September 13, 2014) – The Vassar College field hockey team allowed two first-half scores to Geneseo and could not rally Saturday afternoon, falling for the first time in the 2014 season 2-1 in non-conference play from The College at Brockport.
The Brewers (5-1) allowed two goals for the first time this season, ending a streak of four consecutive games without surrendering a goal. The Knights (2-4) opened the scoring in the 16
th minute of play, as Liz Doherty knocked in a loose ball after a penalty corner to put Geneseo up early.
Just under 10 minutes later in the contest, the Brewers would go down 2-0 after Kailey Suhr scored after getting a long cross from Sarah Malinak. Vassar's best opportunity came in the 31
st minute of play, as sophomore
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) had two shots from point-blank range. Knight keeper Dayna Mercer made the first save, and Doherty cleared the second off the line to keep VC off the board.
Moments later, the Brewers had to call on one of their defenders to keep the score where it was. Following a corner, Diana Ruggiero fired towards net and beat Vassar keeper
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale), but sophomore
Sophie Arnold (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) made a defensive save to send the game to halftime at 2-0.
The Brewers would pressure out of the locker room, and cut the Geneseo lead in half at the 43:08 mark of the contest on
Enya Cunningham's (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) second goal of the season. The senior scored on a penalty corner, as the ball was loose and she knocked it past Mercer.
Vassar College continued to try to net the tally, but could not find the cage as Geneseo held strong for the win. Both teams fired 10 shots on the day, though Vassar put five on frame as compared to just the three from the Knights. Vassar also held a decided 8-4 edge in penalty corners, while Mercer finished with three saves on the day for Geneseo.
The Brewers will finish their three-game road swing Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. against the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.
