Box Score

BROCKPORT, NY (September 12, 2014) – The Vassar College defense posted its fourth straight shutout Friday and sophomore Christina Yang (Singapore/United World College of SE Asia) scored her first career goal as the Brewers knocked off host Brockport 1-0 in non-conference play.

The defensive unit of the Brewers was once again stellar, allowing no shots by the host Golden Eagles (1-4. Over the last four games, the Brewers have allowed no goals and only three shots on goal, spanning 2:20.91 of game action. The 5-0 start is also the program's best start ever, as VC has outscored opposition thus far 12-1.

In the opening frame, the Brewers took eight shots and put six on cage, but Brockport keeper Lindsay Farrell was there to stop all six. Vassar had seven penalty corners in the opening stanza, but could not convert on any the game remained deadlocked at zero at halftime.

After the intermission, Vassar College (5-0) continued to press the issue. The best opportunity during the game came at the 55:40 mark, as junior forward Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport) had back-to-back shots off of a corner but couldn't find the net.

Minutes later, the Brewers would finally breakthrough as a pair of first-year Vassar players connected for the goal. Sophomore Sophie Arnold (Merion, PA/Lower Marion) stopped an outlet pass and fed the ball to Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams).

Bracken smashed the ball into freshman Storm Sideleau (Hopkinton, NH/Kimball Union Academy), who stopped the pass and fired to the right of Farrell. The ball stung the right post, and bounced right to Yang who was sitting on the left doorstep. Yang tipped the ball across the line for the goal, assisted by Sideleau, for her first career point.

From there the Brewer defense would stand strong, not allowing another offensive attack by the hosts. Vassar sophomore Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) led the team in shots with five, putting three on net, while Sideleau added three shots. Junior Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) chalked up her fourth shutout of the season, while her counterpart Farrell made 10 stops in net for the Golden Eagles.

VC held a 16-0 advantage in the shot category, while earning all 10 of the game's penalty corners.

The Brewers will look to move to 6-0 Saturday afternoon with a neutral site contest against Geneseo at Brockport at 1 p.m. in more non-conference action.
