Brewers Best Wesleyan, 2-1

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, CT (September 10, 2014) – Freshman Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo) scored her first career goal to break a 1-1 tie in second half, as Vassar moved past Wesleyan University 2-1 Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers never trailed in the contest, outshooting the Cardinals 26-9 while allowing only four shots on goal to preserve the victory. VC improves to 2-2 on the year with the win, while Wesleyan drops to 0-3 on the season.

McFarland's game winner came in the 70th minute, after sophomore Jordyn Matthews (Newton, MA/Newton North) played a long driving cross from the left side. McFarland one-timed a shot six yards out from the goal, scoring on the right side to put her team ahead 2-1.

Senior Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) opened up the scoring early with a goal in the 4th minute, off a perfectly played cross from junior Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage). The ball found Wheeler's head, and the senior buried her attempt into the left side to put the Brewers up 1-0.

Wesleyan got the equalizer in the 32nd minute, on a 30-yard shot from junior Maddy Keane that found the upper right corner. The teams held even at one until the second half, when McFarland found the net to push Vassar to its second victory.

Vassar will return to action this Saturday, September 13, when the team travels to face NYU at 8 pm.

Note: With her goal today, senior Chloe Wheeler moved into a tie for sixth all-time in Vassar history in career goals with 24. She also now ranks eighth all-time in points (53).
