Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) scored the game's only goal, as Vassar went on to seal a 1-0 victory over Mt. St. Mary (NY) Friday evening. Junior goalie
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made four saves to earn the shutout, while the Vassar defense allowed only seven shots in the match. VC moves to 1-0 on the season with the win, while Mt. St. Mary drops to 0-1.
The game proved to be a defensive struggle, as neither side was able to generate an attack in the early goings. The Knights held a 3-1 shot advantage over the Brewers after the first half, and it wasn't until midway through the second that Vassar became to click with the ball.
In the 62
nd minute, Wheeler buried the eventual game-winner on a through ball into the top right corner of the box. A hard shot into the bottom left corner of the cage beat the Mt. St. Mary keeper, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead.
The Knights did not go away quietly, as the midfield began winnings balls and playing crashing forwards down the field towards the end of the second half. The best chance for Mt. St. Mary came in the 71
st minute, as a shot from senior Marissa Segreto deflected off the cross bar and went out of bounds.
Vassar limited opportunities for the Knights down the stretch, and secured the 1-0 victory to give head coach
Corey Holton her first win. The Vassar women's soccer team will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Hoboken, NJ to compete in the Stevens Engineering Cup. The Brewers have games slated against Stevens Tech (9/6) and SUNY-Cortland (9/7).
Note: Wheeler's goal moves the senior into a tie with Anna Robinsoin  for eighth all-time in Vassar history with 23 career goals. Wheeler is also now tied for 10
th with Susannah Renzi in career points (51).
