Women's Rugby By Tony Brown, Head Coach

Final Collegiate Game For Vassar Women Seniors This Weekend

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 25, 2014) - The curtain comes down on the Vassar College Women's Rugby team for 2013-14 with a final home game on Saturday against Southern Connecticut State University. The Brewers kick-off at 12:00 noon and it'll be the last time we will see seniors Margaret Kwateng, Emma Elbaum, Hannah Fink, and Emma Kading take the field in the Burgundy and Grey jersey. Other seniors include Dallas Robinson, Rachel Thompson, and Anna Carias all injured and therefore on the touchline. Mention is also due seniors who played in the fall but who did not play this spring: Mia Chatterjee, Mia Fermindoza, Natalie Ward, and Chelsea Boccagno.

It is always hard to imagine the team without these stalwart players who have given so much to Vassar Women's Rugby these past 4 years. The team has excelled qualifying for the National Championship twice. They finished in the elite 8 two years ago and this past fall made the Final 4.

In the past 4 years the team has won the Conference Championship 3 times advancing to regional and national playoffs. Their overall record is 49-17-3 and includes 7 victories over Division I schools (UMass., Dartmouth, Yale, BC, BU, Columbia, and UConn).

They have been on tour to Madrid, Spain as well as to Trinidad & Tobago compiling a record of 5-1 while flying the flag for Vassar College and women's rugby. They finished winners at the Beast of the East Tournament in 2011 and runner-up in 2013.

It's an impressive resume by any standard and credit is due to particularly to the seniors. Their individual achievements and sacrifice are equally impressive with Margaret Kwateng and Emma Elbaum rehabilitating from ACL surgery, Emma Kading sustained a broken collar bone, and all the others have endured injuries and time away from the field. Kwateng holds the school record for most tries in a single season and one suspects she will add to that tally tomorrow at Southern Connecticut's expense!

A win would make it 50 in 4 years and not a bad way to wrap up their collegiate rugby careers.
