CANTON, NY (March 29, 2014) – The Vassar College men's team was one tiebreaker set away from a perfect 9-0 score against Liberty League foe St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Newell Field House but had to settle for the 8-1 win.
The Brewers got off to the early 3-0 led after doubles but the No. 2 team of junior
Christian Lyon (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) and freshman
Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory School) and the No. 3 pair of sophomores
Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and
Sha Huang (Austin, TX/Saint Stephens Episcopal) had to fight to earn those match points. Both matches went to 9-7 decisions.
Litsky had a more decisive win at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over John Megas. Phelps topped Rob Schmitz at No. 3 in matching 6-3 sets. Sophomore
Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) defeated Rhonny Rosario 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 while freshman
Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) earned the point at No. 6 with matching 6-4 sets over Kevin Frommer.
Freshman
Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) had a trying first set against Will Kauppila at No. 5 but pulled out the 7-6 (9-7) set win. He then clinched the singles win with a 6-4 second set.
The Brewers will continue their road Liberty League weekend next with the Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 pm.
