CLAREMONT, CA (March 14, 2014) – The Vassar College men's tennis team dropped a close 6-3 match to University of Rochester on Friday morning at Pomona College during the Brewers' (6-6) California spring break tour.
The efforts of sophomore captain
Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles led the Brewers. Cooper first teamed with fellow sophomore captain
Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) for an 8-4 win over Julian Danko and Jonny Baker. He then took on Ben Shapiro in singles and won the three-set match, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Freshman
Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory School) defeated Baker at No. 2 singles with a three-set victory of his own 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. Phelps also went to an extra set despite earning a 6-0 first round win over Danko. The Yellowjacket (7-5) came back on took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore
Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) and freshman
Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/ Celegio American De Quito) both had second-set tiebreakers in close losses at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Udine lost to Ian Baranowski 6-1, 7-5 while Laso fell to Tony Zhao 6-4, 7-5.
The Brewers will next travel to #21 Whittier College on Saturday, March 15 at 10:00 am. The match will be the final of the California spring break trip.
