POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 1, 2014) – The Vassar College men's tennis team battled a close match against Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon in the Walker Field House, despite what the 2-7 final score depicts.
Sophomores
Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and
Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire) were the Brewers' (5-3, 1-0 Liberty League) lone winners at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Cooper finished his match first with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Michael Arguello. Phelps then topped Danny Lubarsky in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
None of the singles matches were straight two-set bouts. Freshman
Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory School) went three sets at the No. 2 position with a second round tiebreaker. He however lost the second and third battles and finished with a loss to Brian Granoff 6-4, 5-7, 2-6. Sophomore
Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) also battled the max amount but fell to Michael Secular 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Cooper and Phelps lost in a tiebreaker during No. 1 doubles 9-8(5). Their dual was the closest of the three doubles matches on Saturday afternoon..
The Brewers will next travel to Saratoga Springs, NY to face Liberty League rival Skidmore College on Sunday, March 2 at 1:00 pm.
