NEW LONDON, CT (February 9, 2014) – The Vassar College men's tennis team will return home after an 8-1 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Sunday afternoon in non-league action.
The only win Coast Guard earned on Sunday was the 8-4 match featuring the doubles pair of Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna. The duo defeated Vassar's
Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and
Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community).
The No. 2 pair for Vassar of
Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and
Christian Lyon (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) took down Robert Renfrow and Bruce Kim 8-5 while the No. 3 partnership of
Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory School) and
Sha Huang (Austin, TX/Saint Stephens Episcopal) defeated Jon Lightner and Karlo Vazquez 8-1.
Cooper had a close first set against Guentert in singles play at the No. 1 spot. He, however, pulled out the 7-6(4), 6-3 victory. Litsky had a similar experience at the No. 2 placing against Renfrow. He earned the win 6-4, 7-5.
Phelps beat Fortna at No. 3 6-2, 6-4, Udine earned the No. 4 win over Kim 6-1, 6-2, Lyon got the No. 5 victory against Lightner 6-0, 6-4 and
Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) got the No. 6 point against Vazquez 6-0, 6-1.
The Brewers will next head to Fredericksburg, VA for the two-day University of Mary Washington Tournament on Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23. Day one will be spent facing Mary Washington at 9:00 am and North Carolina Wesleyan College at 3:00 pm. Denison University will be Vassar's opponent on Sunday at 9:00 am.
