GENEVA, NY (February 8, 2014) – The Vassar College men's basketball team dropped their final road game of the weekend to Hobart College, 68-52 on Saturday evening at Bristol Gymnasium in Liberty League action.
The loss puts the Brewers (15-5, 7-4 Liberty League) in a tie for second place in the League standings. The Statesmen (17-5, 11-2 Liberty League) hold the lone No. 1 spot. Rochester Institute of Technology stands fourth in the League.
Hobart was the first to score just 30 seconds into the game off a three-pointer from Connor Rehbaum. The Statesmen went on to never relinquish the lead in the first half, outscoring the Brewers 31-22.
Vassar opened the second half in high fashion with a 14-5 run keyed by sophomore guard
Johnny Mrlik's (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) six points, junior forward
Alex Snyder's (Rutland, VT/Rutland) four tallies and layups from senior forward
Evan Carberry (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) and junior guard
Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor). The 36-36 tie was the closest the Brewers came to claiming a lead in the contest.
Hobart's Richie Bonney set the game-highs with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Rehbaum finished with 14 tallies while Joe Gibbons and Trey Blanding had 11 and 10 totals, respectively. The Statesmen sunk in 24-of-55 field goal attempts (43.6 percent), 5-of-15 three-point shots (33.3 percent) and 15-of-20 from the charity line (75 percent).
The Brewers were led by Snyder, who had 18 points and 11 boards. Mrlik added 11 tallies to the scoreboard on the night. Vassar shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor, 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from beyond the arc and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line.
The Brewers will next host Skidmore College on Friday, February 14 at 8:00 pm. Hobart will next host Clarkson University on Friday at 8:00 pm as well.
