POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 15, 2014) – Heartbreak settled in for the Vassar College men's basketball team when a last ditch three-pointer from
Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) hit the rim, went straight up and landed just on the wrong curve of the hoop. The Brewers (16-6, 8-5 Liberty League) fell to Union College 73-70 Saturday evening in the Athletics and Fitness Center Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen (9-12, 6-7 Liberty League) opened the second half with a 15-2 run, spanning over six minutes and giving the visitors a 54-41 lead. Terell Winney led the charge with six points while Ryan Whelpley, Laurent Firlotte and Deshon Burgess added the rest of the run.
Vassar fought back with eight minutes remaining with a 16-3 run, taking the score from 64-52 in favor of Union and making it a 68-67 Vassar lead with 1:40 remaining. Junior forward
Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) scored eight of his 22 points in the spree while Mrlik managed five of his 22 tallies.
Union's William Hython placee a layup with 1:21 remaining, retaking the lead, 69-68. Winney extended the advantage with a pair of free throws, making it a three-point, 71-68 challenge. Ladan laid in his final two points with 39 seconds left in play but Winney once again was sent to the line, forcing Vassar to shoot the last second three-pointer.
Ladan and Mrlik's 22-point performances were game-highs. Ladan also earned a double-double with 10 boards. Junior forward
Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) recorded a two-column, double-figure evening with a game-high 15 rebounds and 12 points. Snyder also had the game-high in blocks with three. Sophomore guard
Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) had just as many steals as the entire Union roster with three.
Two of Union's starters played less than 10 minutes and were scoreless while their bench had three players score double-figures and another three play 20+ minutes. Firlotte, Ray Bethel, and Hython had 16, 12 and 10 points, respectively while starter, Winney, added 14.
Vassar will next host Rensselaer Polytechnic on Tuesday, February 18 at 8:00 pm in the Brewers' final home game of the season. Union will next travel to Hobart College on Tuesday for an 8:00 pm start as well.
