POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 8, 2014) – The Vassar women's swimming team opened up Kresge Pool to outside competition for the first time Saturday afternoon, downing Skidmore 175-109 in dual meet action. The Brewers were fueled by 12 event victories out of the possible 16, and never trailed in the meet after jumping out to an early lead. VC moves to 2-1 in duals on the season with the win, while Skidmore drops to 0-2-1 on the year.
"We needed absolutely everybody showing up to get this victory today," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "We knew Skidmore would bring some tough races, but we also knew we could capitalize in some areas like the diving and that's what we did."
Vassar started off the day with a victory in the 200 yard medley relay, as the team of junior Milee Nelson (Champaign, IL/University Laboratory), junior Anna Kuo (Floral Park, NY/Townsend Harris), sophomore Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) and senior Elizabeth Balter (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) combined to swim for a season-best 1:55.89.
Cunningham went on to notch three more wins in her individual events, taking first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:08.04), 100 yard butterfly (58.97) and 200 yard IM (2:15.44). Nelson added a win for the Brewers in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:04.16 to edge the field.
Kuo also turned in a pair of individual victories, winning the 100 yard breaststroke (1:14.13) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:42.60) at the meet. Senior Olivia Harries (Temple Terrace, FL/Lee Academy) also finished with two event wins, taking first in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:06.41) by an almost 40 second margin. She also posted the top time in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 5:29.44 to earn her second victory of the day.
Vassar swept all the possible diving points, led by senior Kelly Wilkinson (Oceanside, CA/Vista) who took first in both the 1 meter (235.27) and 3 meter (232.20) events.
Vassar will return to Kresge Pool next Saturday, November 15 for another Liberty League dual meet matchup vs. RPI.
