POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 8, 2014) – The Vassar men's swimming team opened up its first home meet of the season Saturday afternoon, besting Skidmore 167-114 in dual meet action. The Brewers were paced by 11 event victories out of 16, and move to 2-1 on the season in dual meets with the win. Skidmore drops to 1-2 with the defeat.
"I think our lineup was solid, and our guys were willing and able to get up and really race," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "The key for us today was yes, if we can take first place excellent, but we also needed to pack it up with seconds, thirds and fourths and in many cases we were able to do that."
The Brewers were off to a hot start in the first event of the day, as the 200 yard medley relay team of senior Luc Amodio (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), freshman Jonah Strand (Woodstock, NY/Onteora Central), sophomore Anthony Walker (Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial) and junior Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) combined to finish in 1:40.92 for the event victory.
Amodio went on to earn wins in both the 100 yard backstroke (57.11) and 100 yard freestyle with a season-best 49.90. Strand had a big day for the Brewers, claiming three victories in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.64), 200 yard breaststroke (2:22.40) and 200 yard individual medley (2:08.85).
Walker posted a pair of wins in the 200 yard butterfly (2:02.33) and 100 yard butterfly (54.09). Cristina finished with the top mark in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing in 22.76 to get the win. Sophomore Chris Cerutti (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) also took home a victory in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.73.
VC ended the meet in style, topping both Skidmore teams in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.69.
Vassar will return to Kresge Pool next Saturday, November 15 for another Liberty League dual meet matchup vs. RPI.
