Last Time Out: Sophomore
Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) posted a season-best and NCAA B Cut qualifier time in the women's 200 yard butterfly on November 15 as Vassar swam against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in dual meet action. Cunningham's time of 2:07.39 was under the 2:08.59 requirement, while RPI's Shanny Lin also fell under with a time of 2:05.29 in the event. RPI edged the Brewers 187.5-103.5 in the meet, as the Engineers rode a wave of 12 event victories to secure the win
.A Look at the Hawks: New Paltz is 1-0 in dual meets this season, previously dispatching SUNY-Oswego 150-53 on November 15. The Hawks finished third out of four teams at the NYU Invitational on November 7 & 8, and were second at the Union Relays to open the season on October 25. New Paltz sports a fairly balanced roster, led by captains Samantha Granan, Kat Buyes and Maggie Heaton.
Head of the Hawks: The 2014-15 season marks head coach Scott Whitbeck's seventh year at the helm of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's and men's swimming programs. He has mentored 20 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honorees (12 women and eight men), one James Fulton Award recipient, three Grace Mowatt Award recipients, a SUNYAC Female Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and five All-Americans.
Previous Encounter:The Brewers fell to New Paltz last season 159-135 in a closely contested meet on November 23, 2014. The Hawks earned ten event victories, while collecting several crucial second place finishes to edge the Brewers at home in Kresge Pool.
Record Breaker: Senior
Kelly Wilkinson (Oceanside, CA/Vista) broke her second record of the season against RPI last Saturday, posting a program best 244.57 in the 3 meter diving event. Her score just edged Christine Musket's previous record set back in 2011. Wilkinson previously set a new school record (402.65) in the 1 meter 11 dive event against Bard on October 29.
Cunningham Among Nation's Elite: Sophomore
Julia Cunningham has churned out some of the top times in Division III through the first month of the collegiate season. She ranks sixth in the nation in the 200 fly (2:07.39/RPI) and 20
th in the 100 fly (58.90/NYU).
Next Up: The Vassar men's and women's swimming teams will compete for the final time this semester on December 5-6 at the Liberty League Championships hosted by the University of Rochester. The teams will then enter an extended hiatus before returning to action at Kresge Pool on January 13, 2015.
