Game Coverage: (Live Video) What to Look For: Vassar (2-2) will look to pick up one last dual meet win in 2014, as this weekend's bout with New Paltz will be the final head-to-head matchup for the Brewers before the new year.
Last Time Out: Vassar fell to Liberty League foe Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 173-87 at Kresge Pool on November 15. RPI notched 10 event victories to secure the win, including a sweep of the diving points.
A Look at the Hawks: New Paltz is 1-0 this season, winning its only dual meet over Oswego 141-64 on November 15. The Hawks notched a pair of third place finishes at the Union Relays (10/25) and NYU Invitational (11/7) earlier this season.
The New Paltz roster features only one senior, captain Jack Spader, but has a wealth of young talent new to the squad this season. The Hawks welcomed 12 freshmen to the team this season, and the newcomers will surely make an impact in this Saturday's meet.
Head of the Hawks: The 2014-15 season marks head coach Scott Whitbeck's seventh year at the helm of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's and men's swimming programs. He has mentored 20 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honorees (12 women and eight men), one James Fulton Award recipient, three Grace Mowatt Award recipients, a SUNYAC Female Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and five All-Americans.
Previous Encounter:The Brewers got the best of New Paltz last season, edging the Hawks 144-135 at Kresge Pool when the teams met on November 23. Then-freshman
Chris Cerutti (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) had a standout day in the pool. He teamed with
Patrick Lai (Chatham, NJ/Newark Academy),
Ian Quinn (Montclair, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory) and
Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) in the 400-Yard Medley Relay for a first place finish with a time of 3:53.25. He then picked up two individual wins in the 100-Yard (58.50) and 200-Yard Backstroke (2:06.91). His 100 finish was .31 faster than New Paltz's Matthew Distler who swam a 58.81.
Next Up: The Vassar men's and women's swimming teams will compete for the final time this semester on December 5-6 at the Liberty League Championships hosted by the University of Rochester. The teams will then enter an extended hiatus before returning to action at Kresge Pool on January 13, 2015.
