Seniors Lead Vassar to 3-0 Season Ending Win Over Sage Saturday

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 1, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team got 35 combined kills from its three seniors on Senior Day, knocking off The Sage Colleges 3-0 in the non-conference season finale Saturday afternoon from Kenyon Hall.

The afternoon was emotional for the three seniors, as Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco), Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) and Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) played their final game in the burgundy and gray. The trio did not disappoint the home crowd, posting 35 of the team's 43 kills to lead Vassar (13-17) to the win.

The seniors finish their career with 68 total wins, and just over 2,300 kills combined during their tenures. Vassar College was able to rally in both the second and third sets to earn a 25-18, 26-24 and 28-26 victory Saturday.

In the opening set, Vassar connected on 14 kills and hit a match-best .281 for the first game. The game was close at 11-11, but Vassar rattled of six of the matches seven points to take a comfortable lead, one that it would hold throughout the rest of the set. Pitre and Mosley combined for 10 kills in the first stanza.

Sage (23-6) opened up the second set with a 5-0 run to make the score 17-12, and built the lead up to six at 21-15. The Brewers started their comeback at that point, winning eight of the next nine points contests to take a 23-22 lead. During that spurt, Cardillo terminated three points while Pitre and freshman Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) each had a kill as well.

The set remained tight, but Mosley came through in the end with two kills after the set was tied at 24 to give VC a 2-0 lead. In the final game, Cardillo came alive as she pounded down six kills helping Vassar erase a 22-14 lead. Trailing by eight, Cardillo finished five attacks during an eight-point stretch to pull VC to within one at 22-21.

Sage and Vassar traded points, but the Brewers held strong and forced the Gators into two attacking errors to knot the set at 24. Sage earned another game point, but Pitre answered with a kill and Mosley fittingly ended the match two points later to lift VC to the win.

Cardillo finished the afternoon with 13 kills on 28 attempts, also tallying three assisted blocks, while Mosley added 11 kills and five digs as well. Pitre was as efficient as always, posting 11 kills on just 22 attacks, serving three aces. Sams finished with five kills for Vassar, and Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) added 34 assists, three aces, three blocks and four digs.

Junior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) finished with a match-high 10 digs, while fellow back row player Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) added seven more. Vassar finished the afternoon with a .148 attacking rate (43-27-108), while holding Sage to just 24 kills on the contest.

The Brewers finish the 2014 campaign with a 13-17 record, going 4-8 within the Liberty League.
