Box Score SCHENECTADY, NY (November 1, 2014) – Union's Whitney Bickford notched the game's only goal in the 34th minute, as the Dutchwomen held off Vassar 1-0 Saturday afternoon in the team's final game of the season. The loss effectively knocks VC out of the Liberty League Tournament, as the Brewers end the 2014 campaign 8-6-3 and 2-3-3 in the Liberty League. Union ends their season 11-4-2 (3-2-2 LL).
With the game scoreless through the first 30 minutes, Bickford broke the deadlock after cutting inside the box and placing a shot in the box off the far post. The Dutchwomen hung on to their 1-0 lead through the first half, holding a slim edge in shots 6-4 on Vassar at the intermission.
Both teams were able to improve on their shot totals in the second half, but neither found the net as the Brewers were held scoreless. Sophomore Jordyn Matthews (Newton, MA/Newton North) and freshman Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo) led Vassar with two shots a piece. Junior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made five stops in goal.
Vassar finishes the season sixth in the Liberty League and with a winning record for the third consecutive season. The Brewers also compiled an impressive undefeated record at home, finishing 6-0-2 at Gordon on the season.
