Brewer Field Hockey Finishes Regular Season With 3-1 Loss At New Paltz

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, NY (November 1, 2014) – Hosting New Paltz scored three first-half goals in a span of 5:12 to take control and earn a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Vassar College field hockey team in action from the Old Turf Field on the campus of New Paltz.

The game was scoreless for the first 24:12 of the contest, but Sam Eberle scored with help from Dani Ackerman to put the Hawks (12-6) up 1-0. New Paltz didn't waste any time double its lead, as the Hawks got an unassisted Deirdre O'Neill goal off a hard shot from the right circle. The O'Neill tally was her seventh of the season.

Minutes later, New Paltz added a third goal, as Kayla McKeveny posted her eighth tally of the season on a shot in traffic in the middle of the circle. The rest of the half was fairly even, but VC (11-6) couldn't get any shots off in the period, trailing in the shots category 12-0. The Brewers got a little more going in the second period, but couldn't cut into the deficit until the 69:59 mark of the game, as Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) scored on a corner with an assist from Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams).

Vassar was outshot on the afternoon 20-4, while the Hawks earned a decided 11-2 edge in penalty corners. Brewer keeper Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) made eight stops on the afternoon, while senior defender Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) also made a defensive save for the Brewers.

VC finishes the 2014 regular season with 11 wins for the second straight season, which is the first time in program history that the team has posted back-to-back campaigns with 10 or more wins. Vassar also posted a perfect 9-0 home record on the season.

The Brewers, who qualified for the Liberty League Tournament as the No. 3 seed, will head to No. 2 Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in opening round action from Saratoga Springs, NY.
