Stevens Flies Away With Non-Conference Volleyball Win Over Brewer Women

Box Score

HOBOKEN, NJ (October 8, 2014) – Host Stevens Institute of Technology hit .232 on the evening, knocking off the Vassar College women's volleyball squad 3-0 in non-conference play from Canavan Arena Wednesday evening.

The Brewers (9-12) dropped the contest to the Ducks with scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-17. The first set saw the Ducks jet out to a early 5-0 lead, but Vassar battled back tie the match at 21 after an attack error by Stevens. The Ducks responded with four of the next five points to pick up the first set. Senior Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) led the attack in the game for VC with four kills.

The second stanza was deadlocked at six but a 10-2 run by the host Ducks was too much for the Brewers to overcome. The last game was nip and tuck through the midway point, as the two teams were tied five times during the set. With the score knotted at 13, Stevens (18-3) posted five straight points, and held on for the victory despite a late rally by the Brewers.

Mosley finished with eight kills to lead the balanced attack for Vassar, as she hit a team-leading .286 on the night. Sophomore Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had a balanced night with six kills, eight assists, five digs, and two blocks, while senior Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) chalked up five terminations.

Senior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) added four kills, with freshman setter Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) contributing a team-leading 11 assists and four digs. Junior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) posted a contest-high of 12 digs for Vassar, who dropped its fourth straight contest for the first time this season.

Vassar finished the night with a .114 hitting percentage, leading the dig category for the contest 34-32. VC also posted four blocks, as Miller and Cardillo each had two. Mary Tobin  had a game-high 10 kills on 25 attempts for the Ducks, while Ashley Castillo posted a game-high of 25 assists.

The Brewers return to action this weekend at the Tom Hay Invitational, hosted by Springfield College. VC takes on Westfield State Friday evening, before taking on the host Pride Saturday morning and Smith College later in the afternoon.
