Brewer Volleyball Falls Twice Saturday In Liberty League Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 4, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team competed in the second day of a tough Liberty League weekend, batting Union College and St. Lawrence University in conference play Saturday.

The Brewers (9-11, 3-5 Liberty League) had to deal with a venue change early in the day, as their originally scheduled noon match with Union was moved to SUNY Canton due to wetness on the floor at St. Lawrence. Once the match was moved, the Brewers were unable to get the offense going, dropping a three-setter to the Dutchwomen 25-15, 25-23 and 25-15. VC later in the afternoon dropped its last match of the weekend to host St. Lawrence University, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15.

Union 3, Vassar 0
The Vassar College women's volleyball team again struggled to finish points on the offensive end, posting a hitting percentage of .010 in dropping to 3-4 in the Liberty League. The Brewers tried to rally to even the match in the second set, holding UC to a .125 hitting clip, but VC couldn't quite hold on going down two sets to none.

In the third frame, the Brewers erred a game-high 11 times offensively, and couldn't make up the difference with their serve in falling to Union. Vassar's offense was paced by senior Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal Academy), as she chalked up eight kills and currently has 847 for her career.

Fellow senior Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) was also very effective, as she terminated eight attacks and hit a team-leading .174 for the match, adding nine digs. Sophomore Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) finished with a team-leading 16 assists, seven digs and three total blocks, and Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) collected a squad-best 13 digs.

Union (14-5, 2-1 Liberty League) was paced by the 11 kills from Rachel Wyman, while Lauren Woods also had nine kills. Kat Moeller chalked up a game-leading 14 digs, and Amanda Price posted 19 assists to lead all setters. UC hit .198 for the contest (33-14-96).

St. Lawrence 3, Vassar 0
The second match of the afternoon for the Brewers was one of missed opportunities for VC, as in each of the first two sets the visiting Brewers had a chance to earn a set. In the first game of the match, Vassar battled back from a deficit to tie the game at 14. SLU (15-8, 6-2 LL) would pull away late though, winning the final six points of the opening set to take an early edge.

In the set game, and possibly the most crucial set for both teams, the two teams took turns with control. With VC leading 12-10, the hosts put together a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. Vassar would answer with a five-point run of its own to regain a 17-15 advantage. St. Lawrence responded with a 10-2 run to put the game away and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Vassar struggled in the final set of the match, highlighted by an 8-0 run by the Saints as the hosts finished off the Brewers in straight sets. Pitre finished with a team-best seven kills against SLU, and Mosley added five kills, two aces and eight digs. Senior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) also had five kills and three blocks in the loss Saturday afternoon.

SLU got a game-high 14 kills from Lexi Brown, while Cristina Deschaine posted eight kills as well. Katie Kull and Katarina Marczewski combined for 27 assists for the Saints, as the hosts hit at a solid 34-11-82 (.280) clip.
