Vassar Falls to No. 14 William Smith 5-0

Box Score GENEVA, NY (October 4, 2014) – No. 14 William Smith College used five second half goals to power to a 5-0 Liberty League victory over Vassar this afternoon on Cozzens Field. Senior Madeline Buckley led the defending NCAA Champions with three goals, as the Herons move to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Liberty League. Vassar drops to 5-3-2 and 0-1-2  in conference play with the loss.

The Vassar defense appeared ready to limit the Herons in the first half, as Vassar turned away all ten shots from William Smith to keep the game knotted at zero. Junior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA?Lexington) made six saves for the Brewers in the period, but the hosts reorganized and began producing more opportunities in the second half.

Buckley broke through with her first goal coming in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Kara Shue crossed the ball from the left side of the field and just outside of the box. Senior Krista Longo made a smart decision letting the ball pass by her and over to Buckley who sent a low shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The Herons scored their first three goals in a span of 9:49 early in the second half to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Buckley made it 2-0 in the 61st minute. This time she carried the ball deep into the offensive zone on the right side of the field. Her shot from the far right corner curved into the left side of the goal. Just 2:34 later, sophomore Lauren Randaccio connected off a pass from Shue to make it 3-0. Shue sent a short cross from the right side to find Randaccio just inside the right corner of the box. It was Randaccio's fourth goal this year.

Buckley completed her hat trick in the 73rd minute. Senior MaryClaire Pelletier pushed a pass from the right side of the field. This time, Randaccio made the smart play to let the ball go so that Buckley could fire home her team-leading eighth goal of the season. With 2:36 remaining, sophomore Brie Ruane capped the victory with her sixth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Shay Callahan.

The Herons outshot Vassar 25-1 in the contest. The Brewers will have opportunity to regroup before the team returns to game action on Wednesday October 8 on the road against Montclair State. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
