Vassar Ties RIT in 2OT Liberty League Road Opener, 1-1

Box Score

ROCHESTER, NY (October 3, 2014) – After both sides found the net in the opening 48 minutes, neither team could produce a game winning goal as Vassar drew The Rochester Institute of Technology 1-1 Friday afternoon. In what proved to be a defensive struggle in wet and rainy conditions, Vassar played into double overtime for the second consecutive game  to earn another point in league competition. VC moves to 6-2-2 and 0-0-2 in the Liberty League with the result, while RIT now stands at 4-2-4 (0-1-1 LL).

Senior Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) got the ball rolling in the 26th minute, as she netted her fifth goal of the season off a service from freshman Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo). Wheeler one-timed her shot in to net, putting the Brewers ahead 1-0 early.

Both sides made tactical changes throughout the first half with substitutes, but VC held the Tigers to only two shots to carry the 1-0 lead into halftime.

It didn't take long for the hosts to find an equalizer in the second half, as the scored in the 48th minute on a goal from senior captain Sierra Kiss. After a shot from junior Quincey Ornellas remained in play, Kiss collected the rebound tucking her attempt into the near corner to even the sides at 1-1. The goal marked the first time the Brewers have surrendered a score since September 10.

VC managed only three more shots in the half, and before long regulation expired with the teams knotted at one. Vassar went to overtime for the second straight Liberty League game, but couldn't find a rhythm offensively as wet field conditions further slowed the pace of play. Both teams produced a pair of shots in 20 minute of overtime, but neither could come up with a goal as the clock reached zero.

The Brewers will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon, traveling to face the defending NCAA Champions of William Smith College in Geneva, NY. Kickoff against the No. 14 Herons is slated for 2:00 pm.
