Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 3, 2014) – Vassar netted a pair of goals in the second half, as the Brewers held off The Rochester Institute of Technology 2-0 Friday afternoon at Gordon Field. After a scoreless first half, junior
Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) and senior
Andre Cousineau (Altadena, CA/Eagle Rock) found the back of the net in the final 45 minutes of play to give their team its second consecutive Liberty League win. VC moves to 8-3-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference with the victory, while RIT drops to 3-6-1 and 1-1 in the Liberty League.
After a stagnant first half that only saw eight total shots, Vassar began to generate pressure in the second, opening with three shots in the first 11 minutes. The Brewers finally broke through the stingy RIT defense in the 57
th minute on a fantastic back heel finish from Palmer. Fellow junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) set the goal up with a crisp pass from the right wing, which Palmer heeled past the keeper on the left side of the net to give the Brewers a 1-0 advantage.
The hosts continued to generate pressure throughout the half, and were again rewarded in the 74
th minute after a long ball played by sophomore
Stephen Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) reached a streaking Cousineau down the middle of the field. After getting past a pair of Tiger defenders, Cousineau dribbled around the RIT goalie and finished easily on the open goal to increase the Brewer lead to 2-0.
The Tigers pushed the pace down the stretch, desperately trying to find their first score to no avail. The VC defense did a solid job keeping the visitors away from the goal, as RIT generated only five shots with none on goal in the match.
Vassar will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon when the team hosts Hobart College at Gordon Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
